Only 5 points to Get the Best grinding tungsten electrodes!
If your sharpened tungsten electrode has a shorter work life than others, or keeps cracking, then these 5 tips will help you a lot. Without further ado, take a look at the following 5 tips.
1. When grinding the tips, be gentle and light
Pick up the ground tungsten electrode tip in your hand and observe it under the SEM. You will find,
Those small grains actually have light and dark boundaries, and the boundary parts are easily damaged, they are weak. Especially when the tig electrode is mechanically stressed.
For example, when you sharpen pencils, blunt ones are less tear than sharp ones, aren’t they?
You must be wondering, what’s the connection?
In fact, the tungsten electrode generates heat during the welding process, and if the taper grain boundary is damaged, it will cause the tip to crack easily. Therefore, when grinding tungsten electrodes, the force should be small, because high pressure will generate high heat, and the grain boundaries will be destroyed
2. Your tig electrodes don’t want to be sharpened by your hands!
For great welding results, don’t try the risky method – hand grinding the tungsten electrode. Even if you are confident in the stability of your hand, you cannot fully control the stability of the electrodes in your hand. Because the concentricity of the tip and the taper’s grinding surface must be very smooth, which can seriously affect the outlook of the weld.
Whats more, when you grind by hand for the second time, the data will definitely be different. This makes it impossible to guarantee consistently high-quality tungsten electrode tips. And how important this is.
3. Axial and radial grinding directions, the welding effect is actually the same?
Wrong! Grinding direction, this is crucial when you are grinding tig electrodes.
Why? See the picture. The tapered surface, which has been laterally ground, has a wider arc cone, which results in weak penetration, which can lead to incorrect bottom binding. Longitudinal grinding, however, not only enables deeper penetration, but also helps the welder easily controls the energy applied.
To give you a sneak peek, try making the taper length of your ground tungsten electrode twice the diameter to see if the effect is better than the previous design.
4. The smaller the sharpening angle, the better the effect. wrong!
To make the penetration narrower and more targeted, I need to sharpen the taper tip. Is this what most people think? Then you are dead wrong. As you sharpen the tip, it means that its load is getting higher and higher, and its life is getting shorter and shorter.
You would say, then I blunt the tip? Does it completely solve the above problem? The answer is: no.
When you weld with a blunt tipped tungsten electrode, apply the welding current, which is the same as that used for the sharpened electrode above. The problem arises. The penetration is not concentrated and becomes wider.
Don’t worry, after many times of customer feedback and certification, we have come to the conclusion that the welding results of the tig tungsten electrode grinding angle of 60° are the most satisfactory.
5. This is as important as the angle.
Blunt the electrode head instead of keeping it sharp.
Is there a specific numerical reference? certainly. After our test, the blunt value of the head is 1/10 of the diameter of the tungsten electrode can prolong the life. For example, the diameter of the tungsten electrode is 0.04″ (1.0mm), and the size of the blunt head is controlled at 0.004″ (0.1mm).
What exactly are the benefits?
The blunt tip prevents particles from falling off the pointed tip of the tig tungsten electrode. Also, the flat grinding of the tip relieves the stress applied to the electrode during welding, resulting in a longer life for this wear part.
