Due to the characteristics of tungsten, making it very suitable for TIG welding. In tungsten metal, add rare earth oxides, so that the electrode has better arc starting performance, higher stability of the arc column, and smaller electrode burn rate.

Typically, rare earth additives are cerium oxide, lanthanum oxide, zirconium oxide, yttrium oxide and thorium oxide. Therefore, this has many different names for tungsten electrodes, such as thorium tungsten electrode, cerium tungsten electrode and so on.

Rare earth tungsten electrode

Ceriated Tungsten Electrode

Ceriated tungsten is the best alternative to thoriated tungsten electrodes for low current welding environments.

Ceriated tungsten electrodes are mainly used in low current DC welding applications. 

Ceriated tungsten has excellent arc starting performance at low currents, making it the standard for most manufacturers of tracked pipe welding equipment.

Lanthanated Tungsten Electrode

Currently, lanthanated tungsten electrodes are the most popular electrode material internationally, especially those with 1.5% Lanthanated Tungsten (as opposed to 2.0%).

Scientific studies have shown that 1.5% lanthanated tungsten has the closest electrical conductivity to 2.0% thoriated tungsten. Therefore, welders can easily change electrodes without changing the parameters of the equipment.

Lanthanated tungsten electrodes are also suitable for AC welding tasks and offer excellent performance.

Zirconiated Tungsten Electrode

Zirconiated tungsten electrodes, like pure tungsten electrodes, can only be used for welding work in an AC environment.

Zirconium tungsten electrodes provide good welding performance in an AC environment. Especially at high load currents, zirconiated tungsten electrodes exhibit superior performance that cannot be replaced by other electrodes.  

When welding, the end of zirconiated tungsten electrode can be kept in a round ball shape to reduce tungsten penetration, and has good corrosion resistance.
