Before aluminum and aluminum alloy welding, what cleaning work should be done?

1) Cleaning before welding

The purpose of cleaning is to remove the oxide film and oil stain on the surface of the weldment. This is an important step to prevent pores and slag inclusions.

2) Chemical cleaning – high efficiency and stable quality.

It is suitable for cleaning welding wire and small-sized weldments produced in batches. It is divided into dipping and scrubbing methods.

3) Mechanical cleaning

First, use an organic solvent (acetone, rosin or gasoline) to wipe off the oil on the surface of the weldment. Then, brush with a thin copper wire until the surface reveals a metallic sheen.

Alternatively, clean the surface with a scraper. Please note that the cleaned weldment should be welded within 4 hours, otherwise it should be cleaned again.

4) Backing plate

In order to ensure penetration and prevent the weldment from being welded through or collapsed, before welding, a backing plate can be placed under the seam.
The material of the backing plate can be graphite, stainless steel or carbon steel. In addition, in order to ensure the formation of the weld seam on the reverse side, an arc groove can be opened on the surface.

5) Warm up

For thin and small weldments, preheating is generally not required. However, if the thickness exceeds 5mm, in order to reach the required temperature near the joint, the weldment should be preheated before welding, and the preheating temperature is 100-300°C.

After aluminum and aluminum alloy welding, what cleaning work should be done?

After welding, the remaining flux and welding slag need to be cleaned up in time. Otherwise, they will destroy the anti-corrosion aluminum oxide film under the action of air and moisture. As a result, the weldment will be severely corroded!

Therefore, the residual dirt on the weldment should be strictly removed immediately after welding.

Then, you can use some common slag removal methods:

How to remove slag completely?

1) Carefully scrub the welded joints with a stiff brush in hot water.

2) Dip the weldment in chromic anhydride aqueous solution or potassium dichromate solution for 5-10 minutes at a temperature of 60-80°C and a mass fraction of 2%-3%. Then, scrub carefully with a stiff brush.
Or put the weldment in a nitric acid solution with a mass fraction of 10% at 15-20°C for 10-20 minutes.

3) Rinse and wash the weldment in hot water.

4) Dry the weldment with hot air or in a drying oven at 100°C.
