Tungsten & Molybdenum Micro Spot Welding Electrodes

Resistance spot welding is a fundamental process that utilizes heat generated by electrical resistance to fuse two conductive metal components. It is characterized by concentrating massive energy on a microscopic point within milliseconds, ensuring a secure bond while preventing the surrounding material from overheating.

Through years of field exploration, Yolo’s product engineers have developed specialized material formulas consisting of Tungsten, Molybdenum, and their alloys combined with Copper. Compared to traditional electrodes, our solutions offer exceptional high-temperature stability. This effectively extends electrode service life, enhances welding quality, ensures the smooth operation of automated production lines, and significantly reduces downtime.

The Problem with Conventional Electrodes

In micro resistance spot welding, traditional electrodes often struggle when processing high-conductivity materials such as copper and nickel.
These limitations lead to unstable production performance and higher operational costs.

❌ Severe sticking with copper & nickel
❌ Overheating at electrode tip
❌ Short lifespan & frequent downtime

Materials Selection Guide

Achieving a zero-defect weld requires more than just equipment—it requires a perfect match between the electrode material and the workpiece. Whether your process involves high-conductivity copper foils or sensitive nickel battery tabs, the balance of thermal conductivity, hardness, and anti-sticking properties is critical. Our guide below outlines how our specialized Tungsten, WL10, and Molybdenum, TZM alloys prevent common failure modes like tip deformation and surface contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do welding electrodes stick to copper or nickel workpieces?
Sticking (or alloying) occurs when the electrode material reacts with the workpiece under high heat. Using Yolo’s specialized Tungsten and Molybdenum formulas prevents this because these refractory metals have a high melting point and extremely low solubility with copper and nickel, ensuring a clean release after every weld.
What is the advantage of NDB (Non-Defective Bonding) for electrodes?
Traditional brazed electrodes often have air pockets or impurities at the joint, causing overheating. Our NDB (Non-Defective Bonding) technology creates a seamless, atomic-level bond between the tungsten/moly tip and the copper shank. This results in 100% thermal conductivity, lower resistance, and significantly longer tool life.
When should I choose Molybdenum over Tungsten for micro-welding?
Choose Molybdenum when welding nickel tabs or thin foils, as it offers superior anti-sticking properties and better thermal conductivity for sensitive parts. Choose Tungsten for heavy-duty welding of pure copper or brass, where extreme hardness and heat concentration are required to break through surface oxides.
Can Yolo produce custom electrodes based on my specific machine?
Yes. We specialize in custom OEM manufacturing. Whether you use Amada Weld Tech (Miyachi), MacGregor, or Sunstone equipment, we can manufacture electrodes to your exact technical drawings (PDF/DWG/STEP) with precise tolerances and surface finishes (Ra values).
How does high-density processing affect electrode performance?
Low-density electrodes often have internal voids that cause “hot spots” and inconsistent welding. Yolo electrodes undergo densification treatment, ensuring a uniform internal structure. This provides stable electrical resistance, which is essential for automated high-speed production lines to maintain weld consistency.
